CQI-8 Layered Process Audits (LPA) 2nd Edition Course

CQI-8 Layered Process Audits (LPA) 2nd Edition Course
Principle and Rationale
Layered Process Audit (LPA) is a process audit approach developed in response to defects arising in the manufacturing process, which may be found during assessments against the IATF 16949 standard. Conventional audits may not detect problems actually occurring on the shop floor in a timely way. For this reason, major vehicle manufacturers (OEMs) such as Ford and GM require their parts suppliers to apply the Layered Process Audit (LPA) system as a tool for closely checking the manufacturing process, so that abnormalities can be detected and quality problems prevented from the production stage onwards.
LPA is a process audit that focuses on the activities that matter to quality on a daily basis, with emphasis on verifying compliance with Standard Work and the requirements set out in key documents such as the Control Plan. Performing LPA correctly is not merely a matter of completing a checklist; it is a process that promotes the involvement of personnel at several levels of the organization, helping to detect problems quickly, reduce the risk of defects and drive continual process improvement based on data and facts from actual operations in the manufacturing process.
Course Objectives
- This course aims to give participants the knowledge and understanding needed to apply the Layered Process Audit (LPA) tool effectively in checking and controlling the manufacturing process. Participants learn the concepts, principles and requirements relating to LPA according to automotive industry practice and the IATF 16949 requirements, including how to plan, define the scope, prioritize processes and report audit results.
- Participants also learn the roles of management and the team in planning and carrying out LPA, together with the steps for preparing shop floor audits, audit techniques, recording of audit results and the use of results in management review to drive continual improvement of the manufacturing process. Participants practise through workshop activities and an example of using LPA to audit the Control Plan, so that the knowledge can be applied in their organization.
