Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) AIAG 4th and AIAG-VDA 1st Edition Course
(FMEA: Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)
(Action Priority: AP)
AIAG FMEA 4th Edition
AIAG-VDA FMEA 1st Edition
Action Priority (AP)

Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) AIAG 4th and AIAG-VDA 1st Edition Course
Principle and Rationale
The automotive industry applies a quality management system based on IATF 16949:2016, which refers to the use of the quality Core Tools to support quality planning, problem prevention and consistent control of the manufacturing process. One of the key tools is Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) is a tool for analysing the failures that may occur in a manufacturing or service process, considering their effects, causes and the control methods, and defining measures to prevent or reduce the risk before a problem actually reaches the customer.
In the past, organizations used the AIAG FMEA 4th Edition approach, which assesses risk through the Severity, Occurrence and Detection ratings and the RPN. The AIAG-VDA FMEA 1st Edition approach was later developed to give a more systematic analysis structure, using the 7-Step Approach and replacing RPN-based decisions with the Action Priority (AP).
Personnel involved in process design, production, quality, engineering and the development of the IATF 16949 system therefore need to understand both the former approach under the AIAG 4th Edition and the new approach under the AIAG-VDA FMEA 1st Edition, so that they can prepare, review and improve the PFMEA and link it correctly with the Process Flow, Control Plan, Special Characteristics, SPC and process improvement.
Course Objectives
- To understand the principles, meaning and purpose of PFMEA
- To understand the links between PFMEA and the IATF 16949 requirements, APQP, Process Flow, Control Plan and the other Core Tools
- To understand how to prepare a PFMEA according to AIAG FMEA 4th Edition
- To understand how to prepare a PFMEA according to AIAG-VDA FMEA 1st Edition
- To understand the difference between RPN-based risk assessment and the Action Priority (AP)
- To be able to analyse Failure Modes, Effects, Causes, Prevention Controls and Detection Controls correctly
- To be able to review and update an existing PFMEA prepared under AIAG 4th Edition so that it conforms to the AIAG-VDA FMEA 1st Edition approach
